It’s being called an epidemic and it’s killing more Americans each year than car crashes. Dr. Usman Mian, an emergency physician with Lee Health, is working towards finding a solution to prescription drug abuse. “Over the last decade we’ve lost about half a million people in this country to prescription drugs so it’s becoming a large problem. According to the CDC, about 80 people die every day as a result of prescription drugs.”

The National Institute on Drug Abuse introduces The Swiss Cheese Model of Drug Addiction. This video is an application of James Reason’s Swiss Cheese Model of accident causation (1990) to the risk of addictive disorders. The model helps us understand why not everyone who abuses a drug becomes addicted and why it is currently not possible to predict who will.
